תחרות "שבע הגבעות" ברומא ממשיכה להאיר פנים לנבחרת ישראל ובראשון היה זה דניס לוקטב שקבע את הקריטריון האולימפי במשחה ל-200 חופשי, תוך שהוא קובע שיא ישראלי חדש, 1:46.97 דקות. השחיין בן ה-21 מאשדוד שחה 5 מאיות מהר יותר מהזמן הנדרש לקריטריון וכן 19 מאיות מהר יותר מהשיא הישראלי שהיה שייך לתומר פרנקל והושג באפריל 2018.

עבור לוקטב, מדובר בפעם השנייה ברציפות שהוא משפר את שיאו האישי, הפעם בצורה ניכרת של 69 מאיות, זאת לאחר שהעמיד אותו על 1:47.66 רק לפני כשבועיים באליפות ישראל במכון וינגייט. בסיום המשחה אמר: "וואו, התרגשות מטורפת, עבדתי בשביל זה מאוד קשה ואני שמח שבאמת בהזדמנות האחרונה, אפילו שיש שמש אפילו ממסלול שמונה, התגברתי על זה, ועשיתי תוצאה שכביכול הייתה צריך לעשות בקריטריונים בארץ, אבל בסדר, אני שמח. הרגשתי ואמרתי ללוקה שבכל תחרות אני משתפר משטוקהולם עד עכשיו, שאני מרגיש גם עם הטייפר הסגנון שלי קצת השתנה ואני צריך עוד לתפוס אותו, והנה זה עבד".

עוד באותו משחה, רשם בר סולובייצ'יק שיא אישי של 1:48.00, שיפור של 63 מאיות לשיאו מאליפות ישראל האחרונה. דניאל נמיר קבע במשחה זה 1:50.35. כעת, לפתחו של המאמן הלאומי להכריע על זהות הרביעייה שתאייש את המקומות בשליחים 4X200, החלטה שצפויה להתקבל לאחר תום התחרות.

במשחה ל-200 מעורב אישי, לא הצליחו יעקב טומרקין ולאה פולונסקי לשחות מהר נהקריטריון האולימפי. טומרקין שחה 2:01.06, 1.4 שניות מהקריטריון הנדרש, ואילו פולונסקי שחתה 2:14.38, מרחק של כשתי שניות מזמן היעד.
